My blog is called Color Me Frugal, and in a way this is the perfect name for me since frugality is something that did not always come naturally to me. When I was in college and grad school I sort of went by the mantra that I’ll be making money in the future so it doesn’t matter if I live it up now- I’ll be able to pay off the debt.
Although I managed to avoid credit card debt for the most part, I really made very little attempt to live frugally while in school and unfortunately graduated with quite a large pile of student loan debt (for much of grad school I did not work and basically lived off my loans- bad!!) Cue graduation and entrance into the real world. When I began having to make payments on my student loans, the error of my ways really hit me!

I didn’t see a comment form on Frugal Portland, so I will leave my comment here:
I can relate to you about tackling a few things at once and seemingly taking on more than would be wise. I have a large student loan payment each month and it motivated me to start my blog and make enough money to offset the payment amount. Now that I accomplished that goal, my next target is to offset our mortgage. If I didn’t have debt payments I probably wouldn’t be as motivated and likely wouldn’t reap the long-term rewards of creating multiple income streams.
Yeah, we don’t really have a choice on the tackling a few things at once, since we’d like to adopt as soon as possible… but since we have no way of knowing low long that may take (and the whole trying to start a family thing has already taken so much longer than we thought it would), we really can’t abandon our other financial goals while we are working on that.
It’s always a wonderful idea to steward your money wisely. I try to teach my children that money is like an employee. If they will learn how to put the money to work it will begin to produce profits for them. Unfortunately here in America not everyone learns this essential wisdom. I honestly do not know why they don’t teach this is schools.
Thanks for using my “Dream” picture. I’m glad you’re using it as an inspirational image for your blog post.
Thanks so much for making the picture available via Creative Commons! Seriously a great image. And I love that you are teaching your children that important lesson- you are so right that not enough people learn it.
