This week we are grateful for the help of Mr. CMF’s parents, who live in the same town as us and stepped in to help us when our basement flooded last week. We already had a busy and stressful week planned for this week, and they have been awesome about stepping in and lending a hand with the basement. They helped us empty the basement of carpet and furniture, helped us find a contractor to put drain tile in the basement, and arranged for us to buy carpet from a guy they know in the business, at a huge discount.
Despite the big financial hits we’ve taken in the last few weeks with our car getting a ton of hail damage and our basement flooding (and insurance refusing to cover it), focusing on the things that we are grateful for is helping me at least to stay positive. Has anyone else out there been in the situation where there’s so much negative stuff going on that it would be easy to become really negative, so to combat that you stay positive? I feel like there’s no other choice, really. It’s either move forward and be grateful that it wasn’t worse or stay where we are and wallow in self-pity.
Luckily (or unluckily I guess) we had a pre-planned trip out of town this week, so while out of town I still had time to work on the Weekly Money Roundup and find some excellent articles for you all to read. I hope you enjoy!
Below are the posts we published this week:
Monday June 23- You Need an Emergency Fund- Because When it Rains, it Pours
Here are some articles we enjoyed from other sites this week:
Miranda at MoneyNing writes, 4 Keys to Managing Your Student Loans. I really appreciated this post because I think Miranda offers solid advice to all those new grads out there who may be dealing with an overwhelming burden of student loan debt. This one is definitely worth a read, especially if you find yourself in this situation!
J. Money at Budgets Are Sexy writes, Physical Triggers. I love this post because he offers some great tips for things that you can do to help yourself achieve your goals, both financial and otherwise. Check it out!
Kali at Your Personal Finance Pro writes, How to Talk to Your Family About Money. I think this post covers a really important topic, since money can be such a tricky subject when it comes to family members for various reasons.
Erin of Broke Millennial writes for U.S. News and World report, How to Tell a Bride ‘No.’ I thought this was an excellent article because it addresses a very important issue that many of us face, especially in the summer months: Bridesmaid Syndrome. Can’t afford it? Then you’ll definitely want to check out this post!
Jenny at JennyBlake.me writes, Time is Money: Are You Robbing From Tomorrow to Pay Today? I love this post because Jenny has really great insight here into what’s really important in life, and she also introduced me to a new term called “mental bandwidth.” Intrigued? Then check out this post.
CMF’s favorite FREE money management tools!
Some of the best online tools out there for money management are at Personal Capital, and the awesome news is that they are all FREE! Cash flow tracker, 401(k) fee analyzer, investment checkup, net worth monitoring, and many more! I’m a net worth junkie, so the net worth monitor is my favorite. Check out my Personal Capital review here, or click here to check out all the awesome tools for yourself!
Hey Dee, thanks for the awesome roundup. I think we’ve all been in positions where it’s easier to think about the negative than the positive. Then again, it’s these times that separate the successful from those who will struggle all their lives. Sounds like you’ve got the problems solved and you’re already moving forward. Kudos to you!
Thanks Josh. We are trying!
You’re lucky to have family close by to help in difficult situations! I wish that my family were nearby. It sounds like you’ve got a great attitude. Things will start looking up soon!
We are indeed very lucky to have family so close. And things are already looking up here!
